Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and Advanced (A) Levels are internationally recognized qualifications typically taken by students aged 16 to 18 (grades 11 and 12) in the UK and many other countries. These qualifications are offered by various examination boards, including Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) and Pearson Edexcel.

Advanced Levels

Structure:

AS Levels are usually taken in the first year of post-16 education (grade 12 or year 1 of the A Level course). They are standalone qualifications that can be taken as a precursor to full A Levels or as qualifications in their own right.

A Levels are typically taken over two years (grades 12 and 13 or years 1 and 2 of post-16 education). Students usually study fewer subjects at the A Level stage, focusing on their chosen areas of specialization.

Assessment:

Assessment in AS and A Levels is primarily based on written examinations, which are usually taken at the end of the course.

Examinations may include multiple-choice questions, essay-style questions, problem-solving tasks, and practical assessments, depending on the subject.

Assessment criteria are designed to measure students’ knowledge, understanding, analysis, evaluation, and application of concepts and principles.
